Pink Saturday

Columbus Day is coming up on Monday, October 11, 2010.  I have to admit that the little I know about it is what we were taught in elementary school.  You might remember they poem we used to sign, "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue."  Do you know that some states in America don't have a federal celebration day?  In fact, some Native American celebrations are held in place of Columbus Day.  The Italian-American communities have festivities which are closely tied to their heritage.  The story of Christopher Columbus is more than a story of a trans-Atlantic voyage.  It is a story of mystery and adventure, starting with Ferdinand II and Isabella I of Spain.  The Americas were already settled by Native Indians but it was Christopher Columbus' venture that spread the word to the Europeans.  Not much history is recorded about the Vikings such as Leif Eriksson having visited North America five centuries before Christopher Columbus.  There were many brave navigators and explores, and to them we must give praise for the courage and sacrifice.

  1. Such a fun post, Yoli! I love the history of our country, and how it came to be. Thank goodness for those brave souls who ventured across the ocean to settle this untamed wilderness!
    Happy Pink Saturday!
