For Greater Glory

For Greater Glory

I can't wait to watch this movie.  It is a topic that is very close to my heart, a story about Latinos and our passion for our Catholic faith.  The film pits the Roman Catholic establishment against a government they believe is infringing on their religious rights, and they are willing to fight back.  A chronicle of the Cristeros War (1926-1929), which was touched off by a rebellion against the Mexican government's attempt to secularize the country.

Academy Award® nominee Andy Garcia headlines an acclaimed cast as General Gorostieta, the retired military man who at first thinks he has nothing personal at stake as he and his wife (Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria) watch Mexico fall into a violent civil war.   The General faces impossible odds against a powerful and ruthless government. Yet is those he meets on the journey youthful idealists, feisty renegades and, most of all, one remarkable teenager named Jose who reveal to him how courage and belief are forged even when justice seems lost

The setting for the film is a historical one, taking place in 1920s Mexico. Having successfully overthrown long serving dictator Porfirio Diaz and having defeated counterrevolutionary forces during the 1910s, the Mexican revolutionary government under Elias Calles seeks to enact various reforms. These reforms include, however, efforts that attack the Catholic Church. The increasingly violent means of enforcing the new laws lead to a violent backlash, as several bands of pro-Catholic soldiers, known as Cristeros, rise up against the federal government.
