Christmas is Around the Corner

My daughter Gina and I went to our local fabric store a few days ago.  I was on a mission to find new fabrics for the holidays.   When I told her that Christmas is just around the corner, she thought I was a bit crazy. Yes I know we are in July, and that Christmas is until December, but I love holidays!!!   All I need are pointy ears to be an "official" elf.   I'm already working on Christmas stockings to post in my Etsy store in the next few days.  Please check back!!

Fashion ~ Family ~ Fun

I am having the time of my life this summer with my daughter Gina.  She will be starting the 11th grade of high school in a couple of months.  She just got her driver's license and has her own car.  We have been shopping for back-to-school clothes and it has been so much fun. She is choosing clothes that reflect a modern yet vintage styles with delicate details and soft colors.  Even her taste in jewelry and shoes is adorable.  I'm so glad that she dresses conservatively and affordable for my budget.  Below are pictures of some of the styles she is buying.  We still have a lot more shopping to do and I'm excited that she still wants to take "mommy" along with her.

Make do and Mend

"Make do and Mend" is something parents are used to doing.  Life is about changing and adjusting to new circumstances.  I remember my life being selfish until the children start coming and then all of a sudden I have a greater meaning and purpose.  Often I think my story is so much more complicated because I'm a single mother. The fact is that many people are struggling during these times.  Many people are out work and others are falling behind on mortgages.  Raising children is different than before because social media often has no filter and kids get exposed to things way too young.  Sometimes doing without the latest technology might not be a bad thing.  My experience as a single parent has certainly had some challenges, God was there go guide us.  I give my kids lots of hugs and make them my priority.  My kids are extremely close to each other, so much that they act like twins.  My son will be moving out to go to college in a few weeks.  My daughter will start 11th grade next month.  Our little family is growing up and we continue to grow closer.  We mend the things we need to by not staying upset or hurt with each other.  We pray together every day even if its just a short blessing prayer.  We have also tried to mend the pain from the past, though it is a process that sometimes takes a life time.  It is our Christian faith that keeps us mending and stitching our wounds.  Life isn't perfect but its the small imperfections that give us character.  Make the best you can with what God has blessed you and allow him to work his holy grace to mend the pieces that need attention.

Relaxing Neutrals

Warm, neutral hues can help create a cozy feel. Whether you opt for a sand or beige-colored paint, remember to choose subtle tones.  From calming beige to dramatic black-and-white combinations, neutral colors enhance any room's decorating style.  Think neutrals are boring? That's not the case when they're paired with stylish furnishings and rich textures.  These colors are very versatile. They are restful, and safe, because they mix well with others.  Neutral colors also don't go out of style.  Just update with different colored accessories like rugs or lamps.  Turn on some candles for a soothing touch and relaxing ambiance.  Think vintage, think chic, think neutral.

Wake-up Call

I'm so sleepy.  Waking up and getting out of bed this morning has tough.  Last night my kids and I went to my sister's house for a 4th of July BBQ.  My brother-in-law grilled chicken, beef fajitas, kabobs, sausage, and grilled corn.  Everything was delicious and perfect as we dinned in their gorgeous outdoor patio.  By the time we got home and I finally got in bed, it was almost mid-night.  I woke-up without my alarm clock this morning, which is a good thing because I noticed that I had not set it on the correct time.  I dragged myself in the shower, then quickly changed, and dashed out the door.  I'm sitting here half asleep, drinking my morning tea.  I badly need an energy boost.  Is it almost 5pm?.....not.

Healthy Happy Heart

As I made my oatmeal for breakfast this morning, I started to think how easy it really is to make the right food choices.  I haven't been good about it in the past but as I get older I know it is very important to take care of my health.  I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago for a health screening.  All the lab tests came out at good levels, except my weight.  I got a much needed lecture and awesome support from my doctor.  It has been 2 weeks and I feel proud of myself.  I'm motivated to keep going on the right direction.  I'm not counting pounds or calories because for me it will get me off track.  My need to change is for a better life, not for vanity.  I'm taking it one day at a time, planning meals ahead, and making allocations for exercise.  I have to admit that I missed my diet Cokes at first but not now.  I don't miss the burgers and fries, and my favorite Rocky Road ice cream.  I found some good information at the American Heart Association - Go Red for Women website.  Click on the pictures below for more helpful tips, recipes, activity, and medical information.

Garden Girls

My mother and two of my sisters have beautiful lawns and gorgeous plant beds.  It is a passion and talent they learned from my father.  He used to grow palms trees, oak trees and vegetable gardens.  During the summer he expected us to work outside in the family nursery business. It was the last thing I wanted to do during my summers off from school.  I hated being outside watering plants and clearing weeds, so instead I would go inside to prepare drinks and lunch.  Obviously that means I don't have a green-thumb. Now I wish I did.  My sisters are naturally gifted.  They put a lot of time and effort in designing and maintaining their garden. They have a lot of knowledge about what works best in their climate and during different seasons.  My mother does a lot of container gardening at her cottage.  That woman can bring back to life a dead branch...LOL.  God seems to smile down on them and blesses them with beautiful flowers year round.

Breakfast Is the Most Important Meal of the Day

Kids Need Their Morning Meal

While adults need to eat breakfast each day to perform their best, kids need it even more. Their growing bodies and developing brains rely heavily on the regular intake of food. When kids skip breakfast, they can end up going for as long as eighteen hours without food, and this period of semistarvation can create a lot of physical, intellectual, and behavioral problems for them.

A Good Investment

If you and your kids regularly skip breakfast in the interest of saving time or getting a few more minutes of sleep, remember that eating a wholesome, nutritious morning meal will probably save you time in the long run. By recharging your brain and your body, you'll be more efficient in just about everything you do. Interestingly, studies show that kids who skip breakfast are tardy and absent from school more often than children who eat breakfast on a regular basis. Preparing a good breakfast can be as quick and easy as splashing some milk over cereal. Time invested in breakfast is much more valuable than the few extra minutes of sleep you might get by bypassing the morning meal. If you and your kids seem unable to make time for breakfast, consider enrolling your children in a school breakfast program, if possible, or pack a breakfast brown-bag the night before so that you and your kids can eat on the way to school and work.

Break the Fast to Shed the Pounds

Some people skip breakfast in an effort to lose weight, but the practice is more likely to cause weight gain than weight loss. Skipping breakfast is strongly linked to the development of obesity. Studies show that overweight and obese children, adolescents, and adults are less likely to break the fast each morning than their thinner counterparts.  According to research, skipping meals, especially breakfast, can actually make weight control more difficult. Breakfast skippers tend to eat more food than usual at the next meal or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger. Several studies suggest that people tend to accumulate more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals than when they eat the same number of calories in smaller, more frequent meals. To teens, especially teenage girls, skipping breakfast may seem like a perfectly logical way to cut down on calories and lose weight. It's important for moms to educate their kids about the importance of the morning meal and the role it plays in maintaining good health and preventing obesity.

Bring in the Rain

It is finally raining in central Texas and we really need some relief.  Seeing the rain is spiritually refreshing for me.  It is comforting to know that God will be with us through every season of our life.  We might go through periods of drought when we feel we aren't thriving, but soon the blessed rain will come to lift us up.   Stay strong in faith because God is always with us.  Thank you God for your love and the beautiful rain.

So what do we do on a raining day?  There are so many fun things like watching a movie or catching up on some reading.  I also like to do some online browsing.  It is fun, inexpensive, and inspiring.  Here is one of my favorite online stores.  Smith and Western  is an incredibly awesome online western store.  I'm a Texas girl and ranch-style is my favorite type of clothes to wear.  I love the rustic fabrics, vibrant colors, and cowgirl bling.  From jeans to boots, there is nothing more comfortable for me than relaxing ranch wear.  There are so many western stores in Central Texas, where I live, yet I enjoy online shopping as much.  Be sure you click here to visit Smith and Western online. They have some great sales going on.  There is something for everyone in the family.  The best part is that you can do your shopping from the comfort of your own home.  What did we ever do without the internet???  Anyway my dear friends, get out this weekend and find a western store.  Let it take you back to the early days when American settlers who were pioneering towards the West.  Our nation's history is filled with Cowboys, Indians, and beautiful Spanish senoritas.  It is a love story deeply rooted in our heritage.  This is what western wear means to me.

Healthy Tools

I went to the doctor Friday afternoon for a check-up and a plan to get in better health.  As I get older I need to be healthier physically and it is never to late to start.  Thank God everything seems well so far except for my eating habits, which needs to improve.   I was told to exercise daily and to eat healthier foods.   That means no more burgers, fries, and sodas.  My plan to eat fish, chicken, fruits, vegetable, and water.  I love the Fruits and Vegetable Tools the Williams-Sonoma has.  With easy to use tools that are also cute, there is no excuse to not to eat fresh fruits every day.  With time and discipline I will be on the good road to a happier and healthier me.
