Queen of the Kitchen

My mother gave some delicious corn tortillas to us a few days ago.  You know she is trying to tell me that I need to cook more often, LOL.   Two days in a row I made Mexican meals.  The thing about authentic corn tortillas is that they are best used fresh.  They heat up on griddle "comal" (in Spanish) and come out so soft and tasty.  If you don't use them right away, they can be stored in the refrigerator or even the freezer for future use.  Another great way to use corn tortillas is to make Cheese Quesadillas.  I love soft shell tacos with beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and extra avocado.  I also made Vermicelli "Fidello" for my daughter.  She likes a basic recipe and then add lemon to flavor.  I don't understand the lemon part but she says it is very good.  We used about half of the corn tortillas my mother gave us and will save the rest.  I hope I made my mom proud by carrying on the tradition of cooking authentic Mexican food.  I know my kids were happy with my cooking.  I am Queen of my Kitchen!

First you have to put on a Spanish Senorita apron!

** Funny thought:  If I'm the "Queen" of my kitchen, why am I having to cook on budget?

My Little Valentines

Potter Barn Kids

I have always tried to make Valentine's Day special for my kids.   We all love writing their Valentine's cards for school.  When they were younger we would get cute pencils and erasers.  There was always lots of candy lollipops and other treats.  Baking cookies is a part of our yearly traditions.  I feel that a house is best when something is baking in the over during the holidays.   My kids are teenagers now but I still get them something for Valentine's Day.  I will probably get my 15 year-old daughter a necklace, or anything jewelry (she love jewelry).  My 17 year old son is harder because what do you get a young man??  My daughter will probably take Valentine's cookies to school to share with her classmates.   Valentine's Day is fast approaching so I better start getting together their gifts.  Hope you have a great day!

Go Green & Yellow

I just finished watching the football with my kids.  Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers for winning the 45th Super Bowl.  The Pittsburgh Steelers played a good and respectful game.  I have watched football since I was a young girl.  I really do watch it for the game, not just the commercials.  The half-time show was awesome!!!   In honor of the Green Bay Packers, here is my Green and Yellow tribute with fabulous items from Pottery Barn.  Create a perfect place to relax and entertain indoors and outdoors.  Add accessories in gorgeous greens and yummy yellows.   Bring the outdoors in through plants, flowers, and rustic textures.   I can already imagine myself lounging around in these rooms, relaxing or entertaining.  The rooms are cozy for two or fun for parties.  What ever your style is, Pottery Barn always has beautifully designed selections.

Happy Weekend

It is cold, icy, snowing, freezing in many parts of the country.

I am bringing some color into my world through teal flowers and wedding ideas.

I hope you have a great weekend and you find some sunshine.

National Wear Red Day - Friday February 4, 2011

,

National Wear Red Day 2011 is Friday February 4th. The day helps kick off "Go Red for Women" month.   In 2004, the American Heart Association created Go Red For Women to educate the public regarding cardiovascular disease in women. Heart disease kills more women each year than breast cancer. Nearly one in every three women will die from cardiovascular disease.  In 2010, the American Heart Association set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20% while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% by the year 2020.  By wearing red on National Wear Red Day you can show solidarity against the loss of so many women’s lives to heart disease. Take it further and speak up to your co-workers, tell them about the signs of heart disease.   source

Know the warning signs of an impending heart attack:
  • Chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. These are especially important if they occur during activity or exertion. Jaw pain is often ignored as TMJ disease.
  • Shortness of breath will often accompany the chest discomfort, but may precede it.
  • Other symptoms include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness

Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of 1 in 3 women each year.  This means women just like you - mothers, sisters, friends - are dying at the rate of one per minute because they don't know what you know: heart disease kills.

Tuesday - February Love

I love PINK.   I like all shades, especially hot pinks.  Valentine's Day decorations are so pretty and cheerful.  There are 2 things that my kids love that are pink; cookies and drink smoothies.  My daughter Gina usually bakes Valentine's cookies for my son.  It is nice to see teenagers getting along.  They also like fruit smoothies.  We usually buy those at the mall, but it would be so much economical if we make them. Same thing with cookies.  Gina always has to buy her cookies at the mall.  The cost of 1 double stuffed cookie at the mall is the price of 1 package at the grocery store.  I know what she is thinking.... "it isn't the same from the store".  Thank God I only have 2 kids because I would be broke...LOL.    I think I'm going to look for fruit smoothie recipes and cookie decorating ideas so we can try at home.  Best wishes for a wonderful and colorful February!
